Overview

Home and garden is one of the most seasonal categories in UK clearance. Bought at the right point in the year and sold through the right channels, it is accessible stock for a home-based seller. Bought in October and posted nationwide, it is a logistics problem.

The challenge

The seller wanted higher-value items than small homeware but had no van and no warehouse. Anything genuinely bulky had to sell locally or not at all.

The stock

Ex-retail garden clearance and homeware: planters, garden tools, outdoor lighting, storage boxes, soft furnishings, small furniture items and seasonal decorative lines. Mostly overstock and end-of-season rather than returns, so packaging was largely intact.

Why Palletise was used

Seasonal clearance stock moves in defined windows. Palletise lists clearance and wholesale lots with category detail, so the buyer could purchase late-season garden stock at clearance prices and hold it deliberately for the following spring.

How the transaction worked

One pallet was bought in late summer and stored over winter — a real cost, but a modest one against the seasonal price difference. Delivery was to a domestic address with tail-lift.

What happened to the stock

Small, postable items went on eBay year-round. Bulky goods were listed on Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree for local collection only, which removed courier cost entirely. A handful of higher-value pieces were offered to two independent local shops as a small trade bundle.

Commercial outcome

In this illustrative scenario the pallet produced approximately £2,450 gross return against £1,100 purchase and £520 of costs. Around 40% of sales value came from local collection, where fulfilment cost is effectively nil. Actual results depend on season, condition and demand.

What made the opportunity work

Channel matching. The seller never tried to post a 12kg planter. Every item was routed to the channel that could carry its weight and value profitably.

Lessons for other buyers

Buy seasonal stock out of season if you have storage. Weigh and measure before you list. And treat local collection as a first-class sales channel, not a fallback.
