Retail Clearance Story

How a small retailer supplemented its normal stock with clearance pallets

An independent shop used clearance pallets as a rotating promotional range beside its core stock — better margin, more footfall, no supplier conflict.

Overview

Independent retailers face a structural problem: they buy at worse prices than the multiples and cannot win on headline pricing. Clearance stock offers a different answer — a rotating value range that does not compete with the shop's core, branded lines.

The challenge

The shop's margins on core ranges were fixed by its wholesalers, and price-matching supermarkets was not viable. It needed a reason for customers to visit more often.

The stock

Ex-retail overstock and end-of-line clearance across household, kitchen, garden and general merchandise. Packaged retail-ready condition mattered here, because the stock had to sit on a shop shelf without explanation.

Why Palletise was used

Regular wholesale suppliers do not offer this kind of stock, and the shop had no time to chase individual clearance opportunities. Buying described lots from one supplier turned an ad-hoc activity into a scheduled purchase.

How the transaction worked

Loads were bought every six to eight weeks and delivered to the shop's rear access. The owner selected lots with retail-ready packaging and avoided unmanifested returns entirely.

What happened to the stock

Everything went into a dedicated promotional bay near the entrance, refreshed with each delivery. Anything unsold after two cycles was reduced and cleared rather than absorbed into the main shelves.

Commercial outcome

Clearance lines settled at roughly 18% of sales at a better percentage margin than core stock, without discounting the branded ranges the shop depends on. Figures are illustrative and depend on location, footfall and buying decisions.

What made the opportunity work

Separation. The clearance bay was presented as a changing 'find it while it's here' range, so it created urgency rather than devaluing the rest of the shop.

Lessons for other buyers

Buy retail-ready condition if stock goes straight to a shelf. Keep clearance visually distinct from core ranges. And set a hard clearance deadline so the bay never becomes a graveyard.
